Compass by Tom Scanio

Tell me when I fail to smile,
When my brow is furrowed,
When my attention drifts,
When your words fall on deafened ears.

Applaud me when I do smile,
When my face is beaming,
When my attention does not waver,
When I savor each of your words.

I do not know when the stranger will arrive
Or when the loving friend is here.
I cannot foresee the need for reminders
Or when I can heed your words.

I hope you won’t abandon me,
For you are the compass
That rescues me when I am lost.
